What is a reasonable payment schedule for a £8,000 job?

Should I give a deposit on confirmation of wanting a builder to do this work?

The job is estimated to take 3 weeks.

Additional Info: The builder I was thinking of using has asked for the following (I feel the 25% deposit is too high):

A deposit based on 25% of the total quotation (£8,000) is required on confirmation of the order, and 25% each week ending based on works completed.

Additional info: The builder is a member of FMB, so I am assuming he won't run off with the deposit!

Hi there I'm going to be purchasing a 3 bedroom seem detached but there is no gas supply going into the house I would need new heating system windows rewire walls plastered new toilet kitchen French doors andkitchen extension at the back and skirting doors and walls knocked down how much would this cost I stay in glasgow I've not got measurements yet as I've still to sell my house

We have artex in most ceilings in our house and I have been told they may (or not) have asbestos fibres in them. How do I know for sure? I would like to get rid of them but understand that the procedures if there is asbestos or not will be different. Any advice?

I should probably add that we are planning to skim/re-plaster most of the house in the coming year (walls and ceiling) as well as remove a wall. Not sure if this would affect any possible asbestos?

Please can you give me some advice, I want to knock down the joining wall between my kitchen and dining room, as it is load bearing I will need to put in an RSJ. Will I need to seek a Structural Engineer or a Quantity Surveyor? I will also need some advice re. building regulations. Will I be required to get these in advance of the work or will this be organised for me by the builder/surveyor?

An urgent response would be appreciated!

We have purchased a property which has not been touched for 42 years.
Its structurally sound but needs central heating, probably a complete re-plaster, new bath/ kitchen and redecoration throughout. We do have double glazing though!

In the process of buying a victorian semi which needs a lot of work. External side wall has been rendered but it is starting to come off at the top resulting in some damp seeping down behind and penetrating into the internal walls. I would like to remove all the render to take it back to lovely red brick but not sure how to do this, or how much it would cost. Is this something which we could do ourselves and how do we remove it without damaging the brick underneath. How should the wall be treated afterwards? An idea of the process of removing external render would be great. Any suggestions much appreciated. Thanks.

I recently employed a builder to refurb my house - works involved changing layout of upstairs, so knocking down one wall and putting up a couple of stud walls, plastering, plumbing two bathrooms and knocking down a dividing wall between kitchen and dining area. I agreed a price and timescales with a local builder.

The work proved to be chaotic, generally I consider to be of a low standard and ran two months over agreed timescales, taking four months rather than the two I was told it would take. This cost me as I had to pay for alternative accommodation.

I paid the builder as the agreed - (initially cash, then by direct bank transfer) on a weekly basis. When I started to have concerns I did discuss this with the builder - I did seriously consider changing builders but it seemed too far down the line and I wanted to keep a grip on costs.

We have contracted a builder to repoint the gable end of our end terrace. Having read on various sites about repointing that lime mortar should always be used on old brickwork which were originally build with lime, I was surprised when the builder said he was planning to use cement (4:1 sand cement mix).
Should I be worried about letting them go ahead?

We have discovered a damp wet patch under the bay window sill on the interior of property, we are having problems determining where it is coming from. Any ideas/solutions????

We recently bought a 1930's house with a bay window in the living room. Whilst removing the wallpaper under the window we found black mould which was exacerbated by the wall being covered in polystyrene sheeting. The wall under the bay window had dried out nicely and we then had the plastered knocked back to the brickwork and replastered.

The bay window is a uPVC window with a stone sill on the outside, it has no cavity wall and is stone faced. The external brickwork looks alittle mossy near the ground and some of the stone bricks feel alittle sandy on the exterior but nothing that really scares you too much.

Does anyone have any ideas/information/solutions to this problem. All help will be gratefully received.
